South Carolina Teacher K-12
Teacher Testing Requirements
In order to become a teacher in South Carolina you must pass the South Carolina Praxis II Assessments for educator licensure to meet the requirements to earn your first Alternative Route Certificate. South Carolina Teachers of Tomorrow has created resources to help you with passing these exams and the information below is from our work with the South Carolina Department of Education.
Note that South Carolina works with ETS for the Praxis II Assessments and the tests are computer based – not paper and pencil. You must use your social security number with all Praxis II Exams in order to process your teacher certification paperwork. If you test in South Carolina all scores will automatically be sent to the South Carolina Department of Education.
As of June 13, 2018, it is no longer required that beginning teachers in South Carolina pass the three Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educator Tests to become enrolled in an Alternative Route program such as ours.
You can now simply apply with your bachelor’s degree (with a 2.5 GPA or higher), get admitted and then immediately begin your classroom readiness training at your own pace.
Praxis II Subject Assessments
The next step is to pass the appropriate Praxis II Subject Assessment before applying for your Alternative Route Certificate. You may take additional assessments to increase your chances of getting hired.
Visit the ETS website to view available tests. Our program advisors can be instrumental in helping you choose the correct area for your skills and interests, give us a call!
