How to Become a Teacher
in South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Education is responsible for issuing teaching certificates to potential teachers in the state. If you have not attended a college or university teacher preparation program, you will need to apply for an Alternative Route Certificate.


Eligibility to Teach

In order to be eligible for an Alternative Route Certificate, you must be enrolled in a South Carolina approved teacher preparation program or a South Carolina authorized alternative teacher certification program.

South Carolina Teachers of Tomorrow

To be admitted to the program you must have the following.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution with official transcripts showing a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Completed South Carolina Teachers of Tomorrow application, completed interview with our team and pass the screening assessment
  • Passing on all three Praxis Core tests
  • You must not have been in a student teaching program with a traditional teacher preparation program or have been in another alternate route program

Once you receive your official South Carolina Teachers Letter of Acceptance

  • Work with your South Carolina Teachers advisors to help you every step of the way
  • Begin Classroom readiness Training and Field Based Experiences to make sure are ready to succeed when you get your classroom
  • Pass your Praxis II Subject Area exam(s)

Apply for the Alternative Route Certificate

  • Receive Official Letter of Eligibility from South Carolina Teachers
  • Apply for your Alternative Route Certificate through the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) and submit the following required documentation:
    • Application
    • Official transcripts
    • Passing score report on Praxis subject area exam
    • Current FBI/SLED background checks
    • Application fee of $105
  • Begin seeking employment once you receive your Statement of Eligibility from the SCDE

Start Your Teaching Career!

Once you have your South Carolina Alternative Route Teaching Certificate, you will begin working towards your Professional Certificate. You will teach for three years on the Alternative Route Certificates. You will complete your remaining requirements during your Internship Year (your first-year teaching).

  • Complete all Phase II: Excellence in Teaching and Learning
  • Achieve a passing score on the South Carolina Praxis II Principles of Teaching and Learning exam for your specific grade level
  • Successfully teach for three years
  • Successfully complete the summative Assisting, Developing, and Evaluation Professional Teaching (ADEPT) evaluation process
  • Receive positive recommendation from Campus Mentor and Field Supervisor at the end of your Internship Year
  • Present your Letter of Completion from South Carolina Teachers of Tomorrow as well as transcript of completed coursework to SCDE for recommendation for our South Carolina Professional Certificate
